Ableism In The Disability Community? Surely Not!
Having an impairment is not always enough to be eligible to compete in the Paralympics. But doesn't this contradict what the games stand for
I've dipped in and out of different sports in my life, and have tried a fair few different activities in that time. As I kid I did karate and played football, as a teenager I got most of my exercise from preparing myself to join the army (which never happened, but that's another story) and as an adult, I've kickboxed, climbed and played rugby.
In a way, my Spinal Cord Injury has given me a new lease of life when it comes to sport, and I'm grateful for that. I now play para-ice hockey for Sheffield SteelStings and play rugby for Warrington Wolves and Ireland. I can't say I'm not proud of myself!
