Exploring: St Davids, Wales, UK

A fun fact about St Davids, is that it's Great Britain's smallest city - with a population of just 1, 600 people! I visited the city in February, 2022, with my sister and our dogs - Archie and Fergus.

I used my power chair to get round the city, and found it relatively easy to navigate. Unfortunately, there were quite a few shops that had a step or two, meaning I couldn't get in, but getting around in general was pretty stress free. I noticed that some of the pavements are quite narrow, so I had to use the road instead, but given how quiet the area was, I didn't feel unsafe in doing so.

We spent half a day exploring the city, and had the chance to wander round the Cathedral grounds and see the ruins of The Bishops Place.

At first, the cathedral grounds don't look wheelchair accessible, given the steep staircases down. However, if you follow the road round, it will take you the 'step-free' way, down to the grounds. The road is pretty steep, so if you're a manual chair user, using a power attachment or getting some help from a friend, might be necessary. I know I'd have struggled to push up that hill!

The actual cathedral grounds have level, tarmac paths around, with a few benches for those who need to take a break - or just want to sit and take in the view!

The Bishop's Place ruins are just metres away from the Cathedral, so we had a nosy round. You can pay to enter the ruins and take a good look round, but instead we chose to take the dirt road up the side of the ruins and see the birds eye view of the ruins (Maybe because we were cheapskates!). The dirt road was just about doable in my chair, with only one near miss, where my chair got stuck on a rock and nearly threw me out!

Overall, it was a nice way to spend the afternoon, and I enjoyed being able to explore the area, with my sister and the dogs. I think if I visit again, I'd like it to be in the summer, so that more places in the city are open. But if you find yourself in the area, with some time to spare, it's a great place to spend a few hours.
